White Snow / Black Sea

About this site

Celebrating Sochi since 2010. Dominic Basulto has been documenting the transformation of Sochi into the host site of the 2014 Winter Olympics. As of March 2013, White Snow / Black Sea is also an iPad travel guide available on iTunes and a Kindle travel guide available on Amazon.

The Launch of White Snow Black Sea
The inspiration for the White Snow Black Sea blog first came as I was watching the closing ceremonies for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. The blog is a celebration of the city of Sochi, Russia and its hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympics. With nearly four years to go until the Sochi 2014 games, it’s clear that many people have absolutely no familiarity with Sochi whatsoever. The city itself is extraordinary – even within Russia, it’s known as more of a summer beach resort than a winter sports paradise. (The current edition of the Lonely Planet guide for Russia compares it to Miami being named the site of the next Winter Olympics) The name “White Snow Black Sea” derives from the geography of Sochi itself – a city set on the Black Sea, with White Snow mountains all around it.
